Mazda's Takuminuri finishes — Soul Red Crystal and Machine Grey in particular — are some of the best-looking paints on the road and some of the least forgiving. Every wash mark shows.
What Mazda paint is actually like
Multi-layer finishes with a translucent colour layer over a reflective base. Thin overall film build, so correction has to be measured — there's less clear coat to work with than the depth of colour suggests.
What we see most on Mazdas
Swirls in Soul Red Crystal
The candy-style layering magnifies every fine scratch. Under direct sun the swirl pattern is unmistakable.
Thin film build
Total paint thickness on Mazdas is often lower than the class average. Aggressive cutting is a genuine risk here, so we take depth readings first.
Front-end stone chips
Bonnet and bumper chipping is common. On Soul Red it stands out badly because the base layer is a different colour.
Water spotting on dark greys
Machine Grey shows mineral spotting from bore water and sprinklers within days.
How we prep a Mazda before coating
Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.

Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.

Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.

Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.

Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.

Paint depth mapped across every panel before correction — Mazda film build leaves little margin.

Refinement stage with a soft finishing pad to remove any micro-marring the cutting stage leaves in the translucent layer.

Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.

Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.

IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
